Sgt. Sue Kenny

Fox’s Pizza, Guinness, the Cork and Kerry Irish Pub, Madden Funds and Flood Brothers Disposal present the Hibernian Radio Hour as we continue on our First Responders Tour at The Cork and Kerry Pub on Western Avenue and this week we welcome back Sergeant Sue Kenny. Sue has been working with CPD for 23 years and has a plethora of stories to share with us from her years on the job. She grew up in Tinley Park and she got the bug to join the Force through her first volunteer position. Sue has received many awards over the course of her career including a Life Saving Award and most recently The Chicago Leadership Award. She works in the Peer Support Program which supports and helps officers with PTSD and other mental health issues due to the stress of the job. She chats with Houli about the intensity of working as an officer, especially when having to make split second decisions that could mean life or death. When Houli asks if she sees a light at the end of the tunnel, Sue replies “This has gone on way longer than it should have…”. On a brighter note, she is just back from a 10 day Safari trip in Botswana and Johannesburg. Sue talks about how it all started as a kid reading Horse Illustrated and how she travelled for 22 hours on some questionable modes of transport but all the free booze helped! She has been riding horses since she was 10 years old and got to see plenty of wildlife such as elephants and big cats. One of her guides was a former police officer in South Africa so they had plenty to discuss! “It was the trip of a lifetime!” Sue and Houli then discuss their personal takes on the current social unrest in the country and Sue shares some advice with her fellow officers – “Don’t wait until you retire, do your bucket list now!” Houli then brings us up to date on some upcoming events including our annual trip to Ireland in October, contact 1-800-664-7474 to book! Don’t forget The Emerald Society’s Ribfest and Awards Night on June 13th, 7pm at FOP Lodge #7 – plenty of great food and Irish entertainment! Then t’s over to the obituaries and we’d like to extend our sincerest condolences to the Flood family on the recent loss of the legendary Mike Flood. We take one last trip to “Houli-Town” to end another wonderful show this week!
