Sgt. Bob Kellam

Fox’s Pizza, Guinness, the Cork and Kerry Irish Pub, Flood Brothers Disposal and Chicago Firefighters Union Local 2 present the Hibernian Radio Hour as we continue on our First Responders Tour at The Cork and Kerry Pub on Western Avenue and this week we welcome Sergeant Bob Kellam. Bob grew up in Thomas More parish and is the oldest of five kids. He attended St. Rita’s and worked as joint Head Soccer Coach there with CFD’s Tim McCarthy up until ’19. They had quite a successful legacy there  with the amount of wins they had under their belts! He also set up the Chicago Police Soccer Team. Bob has worked on the Force for 22 years and it’s safe to say his blood runs blue! Five of his family members were involved with Law Enforcement including his grandfather who was a Lieutenant and his uncle who was a Captain. Bob’s other grandfather was an Alderman in Chicago also! He is married with 3 kids and he chats to Houli about how he met his wife who is a 2nd grade teacher. He joined CPD in 1999 and spent 16 years in the 9th district as a patrolman. He now works as Tactical Sergeant in District 22 and chats about his typical day on the job. Bob and Houli discuss the current social unrest and the many changes Bob has witnessed since he started on the job. “Somebody has to take care of the bad guys!”. These two chat about the friends they have in common and some of the well-known characters on the southside. Bob has more than his fair share of insightful stories from his 22 years on the job so far and he shares some including the hilarious story about a 4th of July weekend call that ended up with him in a swimming pool after a dog chase. He tells another incredible story about a call he got from Honolulu PD looking for a wanted fugitive that Bob found hiding in a fridge. You have to hear his stories yourself to believe them! He has been to Ireland 3 times and is extremely interested in his family’s heritage – they hail from Mayo, Kilkenny, Galway and Roscommon. He also shares the story about his courageous grandfather, Richard, who was drafted to the Marines in WW1. We are delighted to have Bob join us this week and share all his wonderful stories with us! Houli then brings us up to date on the latest Irish-American news followed by the recent obituaries. We take a musical break with “Wavelength” by Van Morrison and then we’re off on a final trip to our favorite place, “Houli-Town”. Happy 4th July to all our listeners!
